Server Backup Services for Colleges and Departments

Getting Help | Service Details | Installing the Client | Client Software Downloads & Documentation | FAQs

Information Services provides backups for servers on-campus using EMC NetWorker (formerly Legato Networker). Currently, we are licensed to back up most versions of Windows, Linux and Unix.

Server Backup Request Form

DCAs and system administrators can use the following form to request server backup services.

The charge for backups is $50/client/month and .25 cents per GB of data backed up in a month. The per client fee covers our overhead costs, including licensing, FTE, and hardware replacement. The per GB fee covers the cost of new tapes.

The system administrator for the box is responsible for:

  • Installing and configuring the EMC client
  • Being familiar with backup strategies and recovery procedures
  • Referring to the EMC Disaster Recovery Guide for detailed information.

Getting Help

During normal working hours, send mail to net (at) oregonstate.edu. For after-hours emergency assistance with restores, contact the on-call tech by calling 7-HELP.

Service Details

Our backup server is a Dell R510 running Oracle RedHat Linux and Networker 8.0.1.

In March, 2009 we purchased a Data Domain 580 appliance with 20tB of usable disk. In January, 2010 we added Overland NEO 2000E LTO4 fiber channel tape drives to replace the Spectra Logic.

Our window for backups is to start every night at midnight. Full backups are generally scheduled to happen on weekends to avoid impacting customers. Sysadmins may choose a preferred backup schedule.

Installing the Client

When installing the client, make sure to specify the Networker server name as:

nsr1.nws.orst.edu

Using NetWorker - Frequently Asked Questions

How do I install or use the client software?
Follow the links in the table above to the NetWorker documentation for your platform. Also, you should read the EMC Disaster Recovery Guide and be familiar with what is involved in restoring your server.

Why am I getting this error when I run the EMC client?
If you get an error message when trying to open the NetWorker user program saying that the server cannot be found, or that the media database cannot be opened, you will need to specify the backup server to use like this:

Windows: c:\program files\nsr\bin\winworkr.exe -s nsr1.nws.orst.edu
Linux/Unix: /usr/bin/recover -s nsr1.nws.orst.edu

What do I do if I need help with a restore?
During normal working hours, send mail to net (at) oregonstate.edu. If you need assistance with an emergency restore during off-hours, page us by contact oncall person by using 7-HELP. We can temporarily disable the nightly backup process if it's using up all available drives, for example. Or, if you need to be able to restore to another host, or quickly have a host added to Networker, we can help you out.
